Roof Lanterns vs. Bi-Fold Doors: Which Adds More Light to Your Home?

Roof Lanterns vs. Bi-Fold Doors: Which Adds More Light to Your Home?

When homeowners start planning a renovation — whether it's a full extension, a kitchen refit, or simply opening up a tired back room — natural light is almost always at the top of the wish list. And two solutions dominate the conversation: roof lanterns and bi-fold doors.

Both transform a space. Both flood interiors with light in a way that smaller windows simply can't. But they do it in fundamentally different ways, and choosing between them — or deciding whether to invest in both — depends on more than just personal preference.

Here's what to weigh up before you decide.

How they each let light in
The most obvious difference is direction. Bi-fold doors draw in horizontal light from your garden or outdoor space, framing the view and effectively dissolving the wall between inside and out when open. Roof lanterns, by contrast, pull light down from above — and crucially, they do so throughout the day, regardless of which way your home faces.

That distinction matters more than it might first appear. A north-facing room with bi-fold doors will still feel relatively dim, because the doors are only as useful as the light hitting them. The same room with a roof lantern will feel transformed, because overhead light is consistent from sunrise to sunset. Conversely, a south-facing room benefits enormously from bi-folds, where the doors can be opened to genuinely extend the living space outdoors on warmer days.

So the first question to ask isn't which product is better — it's how light moves through your room and what you're actually trying to achieve.

Where each one earns its place

Bi-fold doors excel when there's a relationship between the interior and an outdoor space worth opening up to. A garden, a patio, a courtyard — anywhere that becomes part of the home in good weather. They're particularly impactful in kitchens and living spaces where entertaining matters, and they add a sense of generosity and flow that's difficult to achieve any other way.

Roof lanterns earn their keep in deeper rooms — typically extensions, but also kitchens that have been knocked through or rooms where windows alone can't reach the middle of the space. Anywhere the floor plan is wider or longer than a single bank of windows can serve, a lantern lifts the ceiling visually and prevents the room from feeling cavernous or dim at its centre.

It's also worth thinking about how the room is used. Bi-folds shine in social, outward-facing spaces. Lanterns suit rooms designed for lingering — reading, dining, working from home — where consistent overhead light makes a tangible difference to how the space feels day to day.

Cost, planning and practicalities
Both products represent a meaningful investment, and the costs are broadly comparable for a quality specification, though the variables differ. Bi-fold pricing scales with the number of panels, glass specification and frame material. Lantern pricing scales with size, glazing performance and the structural work required to install one — which often involves a steel and additional building work beyond the lantern itself.

Planning permission is rarely an issue for either when fitted as part of an existing extension or replacement, but anything that alters the roofline or affects a listed building is worth checking early. Building regulations apply in both cases, particularly around thermal performance and safety glazing.

Energy efficiency is sometimes raised as a concern, but modern aluminium bi-folds and high-specification lanterns both perform well thanks to thermally broken frames and advanced glazing. The Korniche range, for instance, is engineered specifically for thermal efficiency, while Origin's bi-fold doors are built to similarly high standards.

When to consider both

For larger extensions in particular, the question often isn't either-or. A roof lantern over a kitchen island paired with bi-fold doors across the rear wall is one of the most popular combinations in modern home design — and for good reason. The lantern handles overhead light at the centre of the room; the bi-folds handle the connection to the garden. Together, they create a space that feels bright, open and properly resolved from every angle.

If your budget allows for both, the result is almost always greater than the sum of its parts. If it doesn't, prioritising the one that addresses your room's biggest weakness — whether that's a dim centre or a closed-off feel — will deliver the bigger impact.

Seeing the difference for yourself

Photographs and product brochures only tell you so much. The real difference between these products is best understood in person — standing under a working lantern, or watching a set of bi-folds open into a room.

At our Peterborough showroom, we have full-size working displays of both, so you can see exactly how each one looks, feels and performs before making a decision. Our team is on hand to talk through your project, the orientation of your room, and which combination will work hardest for your space.

To find out more, you can download our brochure or get in touch with the Safeguard team to arrange a visit. Whether you're weighing up one product or considering both, we'd be glad to help you get the most out of your home's natural light.
